Places that I want to visit in Southern Leyte

Southern Leyte (Cebuano: Habagatang Leyte, Filipino: Timog Leyte) is a province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is the city of Maasin. Southern Leyte was a sub-province of Leyte until it was made into an independent province. Southern Leyte includes Limasawa, an island to the south where the first Roman Catholic Mass was held and considered to be the birthplace of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines.[3]

I have here 9 places that I love to visit here in Southern Leyte and I know you will love it too. Let’s go! Let’s explore the natural beauty of Southern Leyte!

Camp Danao Forest Park, also called Maasin City Forest Park, is located 15 km away from Maasin City, the capital city of Southern Leyte.

The sprawling forested area has a man-made lake and contains one of Southern Leyte’s tourism hubs: Maasin Zoo and Adventure Park. One of the specialties of the zoo is that the animals are not kept in cages but separated from the spectator by natural barricades.

4. Hanginan, Maasin City

Hanginan is a traditional pilgrimage site of most Maasinhons especially during the Lenten season. The one-hour hike to Hanginan might be tiring but would later be paid off after you receive the blessing from Saint Francis Xavier and after a cup of “kapeng binukbok” coupled with Hanginan’s famed bibingka (baked or steamed).

5. Tangkaan Beach Resort

Tangkaan Beach in Padre Burgos, S. Leyte is the only white sand beach that can be found in the whole mainland of Leyte. The beach in the eastern part of Leyte is made of black sand, while in the western part it is mostly of pebbles and stone and rocks. However, Tangkaan beach proves to be different. Not only has it white sand for the beach but it also has some beautiful rock formations. The sea is clear and surprisingly it has beautiful corals teeming with small fishes just two or three meters from the shore during low tides. The name itself has a story. ‘Tangka” means to attempt. In the past, there have been several attempts by the Moros to raid the place, but they could not get to land their boats because of the strong currents. Hence, the name Tangkaan. This strong current, I found out when I went on snorkeling. I did not even have to exert any effort to swim as the current was fast. The good thing was that the current was not going out into the open sea but just along the island.

6. Kuting Reef Resort and Spa

KUTING REEF is considered as one of Southern Leyte’s most intimate secrets. It is situated in a private cove at Brgy Asuncion in the town of Macrohon. For many years, only a few people knew about the existence of a fine pebble beach within a 3-hectare property covered by bermuda grass and planted with tall 30 to 40 year old coconut trees. Kuting Reef gives you an exclusive, luxurious and yet relaxed tropical resort experience. It is a nice place to bond with your family and friends. In fact, in Kuting Reef we encourage you to bring only the people you love.

On July 25, 1994, Limasawa was declared as a tourist zone with the issuance of Republic Act 7822. With this declaration, the tourism master plan of the municipality was prepared.
